E-invoicing in El Salvador: a practical guide to the DTE

Electronic invoicing is no longer optional in El Salvador. Since the Ministry of Finance (MH) rolled out the Electronic Tax Documents (DTE) system, every business — large or small — must issue its receipts digitally. This guide explains, in plain terms, what that involves and how to do it without wasting hours.

What is a DTE?

A DTE is the electronic, legally valid version of your tax documents: consumer invoices, tax credit receipts, credit and debit notes, and more. Each document is electronically signed and transmitted to the MH, which seals it and assigns a unique generation code.

How the process works

1. Generation: you create the document with the client’s data and the products.
2. Signing and sending: the document is signed and transmitted to the MH portal.
3. Sealing: the MH validates and returns the sealed document (a JSON file and its PDF).
4. Delivery: it’s sent to the client and kept for accounting.

The MH’s free system covers the basics, but it forces you to type every field manually, invoice by invoice. That’s where the time goes.
